I’m a twenty-something wedding photographer in Texas who photographs couples who are ready to celebrate their marriage. Building my business has been one hell of a ride, so grab a cup of coffee (or some wine - no judgement here) and join me for my life behind the lens.
When I first thought about starting my business, I had this expectation that it would be extremely competitive. I thought the wedding world would be this harsh place full of vendors who I could NEVER be friends with. It was all part of business, right?
Thankfully, I was wrong. VERY wrong.
My experience as a business owner and wedding vendor has been quite the opposite. I have met so many incredible people that have become some of my closest friends. Seriously though, if you told me 3 years ago that I would have two wedding photographers in my own bridal party, I would have said thats crazy talk! In San Antonio, we have a huge network of creatives who truly value community over competition. This group has been the heartbeat of my business journey, and I am so thankful that Rising Tide Society is in my life!
One thing I have learned is this: creatives and vendors I work with have the same goal in their heart – to make your wedding day the best day of your life.
So why not tell you about some of these awesome people I have worked with?! Let’s start with my friend, Keri from The Event Assistant. The Event Assistant is here to help you plan and execute the most important day of your life – a must have for every bride!
Keri is a friend of mine that I met outside of the wedding world (her husband and my fiancé work together). She has recently started her own business journey after working in the industry for a while. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to photograph a BEAUTIFUL Navy and Mint table scape she had designed. The florals from Eden’s Echo literally took my breath away. I even have one of these images as my desktop background because I loved them so much!
Keri was gracious enough to answer some questions about her business and tips for brides! Scroll down to read the full interview!
First thing about me is I don’t like talking about myself. But the cliff notes are that I love planning everything I do. I am the person who plans the packing for vacation. In college I really struggled with finding something I was good at and loved doing. I feel like I accidentally found my way to planning events but I know that it is what I was always meant to do. – When I started my business I wanted to be different. The way that I think I am most different is that I really do run my business as though I am an assistant. My clients will get weekly status reports, I set things up for them to review and approve, and on occasion I pick up some coffee for meetings.
My favorite part of my job is taking the stress away from my clients. When you first get engaged and start thinking about all of the puppies and rainbows of a wedding most are thinking, “this is going to be so much fun.” Well there are also a few not so wonderful parts of planning events. There is also the struggle of balancing the planning of an event on top of work, family, friends, and your regular life.
When looking for a planner I think couples should ask the following questions:
Hire a day of coordinator. You will spend so much time and effort planning your wedding day, but even if you plan every second there are some things you cannot control until the day of. Give yourself the gift of not having to worry on your wedding day.
